The Iowa Secretary of State’s Office conducted three mock elections centered around the 2016 election. Elections 101, Caucus 101, and the Iowa Youth Straw Poll comprise the three elements of our youth voter education program. Elections 101 and Caucus 101 are completely free, online, customizable curriculum options that adhere to the Iowa Core for Social Studies. Our curriculum is used in hundreds of schools across Iowa. Both the Caucus 101 and Elections 101 curriculum are designed to cover a variety of topics regarding American politics and the special role Iowa plays in the political process. The complete lesson plan spans over the course of several class periods while leaving one designated day for a mock election.

This mock election typically takes place one week before Election Day at hundreds of schools statewide and is called the Iowa Youth Straw Poll. Partnering with BOTH the Iowa Democratic Party and the Republican Party of Iowa, we have held three such events. The first was named the Iowa Youth Caucus and took place after school with the help of county-level Democratic and Republican parties.

The second was the first-ever Iowa Youth Straw Poll that took place a week before the Iowa Caucuses in over 250 Iowa schools. The most recent Youth Straw Poll took place a week before the November 2016 general election and involved over 250 schools and over 58,000 students.

The statewide event featured live results reporting on our website, and a live stream production called #IAparticipate which featured Iowa students whose schools had participated in the Youth Straw Poll.
